You’ll be picking the flowers for a long long time.

I envy the clarity, the hint of rawness, searching behind the melody for the instrumental colour and am touched how the instrumentalists colour the vocals with pastel tenderness. Wonderful!!!
Nice turns and twists as you make it your own………..

JAPAN TRAVELLER September 2000
By Peter MilesWith Lost and Found, Donna Burke (vocals) and Bill Benfield (guitars and mandolin) have realized a long held dream of recording songs that were special to them. Donna is gifted with a strong voice and an exceptional range, no doubt developed through her years of singing everything from Puccini, Celtic ballads, jazz, pop to soul. Bill’s passion lies more with blues and folk music and whether on acoustic or electric guitar, you can be assured to hear some inspired playing. The arrangements on this CD range from covers of Bob Dylan to Gershwin to John Denver, yet this couple brings a fresh outlook to this material. Jim Webb’s Wichita Lineman has been adapted to bring out the beautiful melancholic chordal progression of the music, sensitively played by keyboardist Morgan Fisher (formerly of Mott the Hoople) with Donna crafting the vocal line into a haunting ballad. I Love You Honey which brought such success to Patsy Cline is reworked into a tongue-in-cheek Rock- a -billy classic. Other outstanding tracks include Annie’s Song and Danny boy. Donna’s writing skills are also evident on this CD with her composition I need a Wife. Great packaging, masterly produced by Stephen McKnight and with photographs from resident blues man Steve Gardner. Available in store from 30/9 or from www.dagmusic.com
Lost and Found
ESQUIRE Japan October 2000These two musicians are based in Tokyo and with their original, new arrangements of Irish traditional songs, Gershwin and John Denver, they succeed in giving new shine to these songs. Especially with the slow tempo songs Donna’s voice is so clear that you will find yourself unconsciously drawn into the music
Lost and Found
TOKYO CLASSIFIED September 2000
By Dan GrunebaumOne listen to the debut album by Australian singer Donna Burke and multi-instrumentalist Londoner Bill Benfield- regulars on the Tokyo pub rock circuit- and it’s clear that this pair have a relationship that goes beyond a simple meeting of minds. The sensitivity with which Benfield’s bluesy, sinuous guitar solos respond to Burke’s slightly countrified bell- like voice point to a deeper affection together. Whether Burke and Benfield are giving a stirring rendition of the Dylan classic Forever Young, interpreting a traditional folk song such as Carrickfergus or romping through the country satire I Need A Wife, “Lost and Found”, recorded in a Tokyo apartment, virtually bursts with promise.
DONNA BURKE with the David Silverman Quartet
CD Journal Japan October 2001This fresh jazz vocal album comes from Donna Burke, an Australian singer who has been living in Tokyo for four years. The subtlety of the phrasing blows through the songs like a gentle sea breeze. Not many jazz vocal albums show any sense of freshness, but this one is different. The purity of “Summertime” evokes a return to childhood, while the adult, passionate reading of “My Funny Valentine” makes you want to grab your sweetheart and dance. Each track is a little gem. Her singing isn’t forced and she leaves the musicians a lot of space. I hope she isn’t going to change.
